1. Kudo Bakery – CBD

The small but thriving Kudo is a safe haven for coeliacs and the only dedicated gluten-free bakery in Melbourne’s CBD. It’s a great place to stop in for a coffee and a snack — or even lunch — if you’re meandering through the city’s laneways.

Kudo offers a wide variety of gluten-free breads, toasties, and sweet treats, from a gluten-free sourdough (it’s so good, you wouldn’t even know it’s not the real thing!) to delicate canelés and savoury tarts (the potato one is my favourite when it’s available).

Kudo’s commitment to gluten-free excellence is clear in every bite. I love Kudo so much that I stop by every few weeks to buy a fresh loaf of sourdough—not great for my wallet, but my taste buds are always happy!

Strawberry and cream “chaffle” at Regretless cafe

4. Regretless – Low Carb Pleasure – CBD

While not technically a bakery, if you’re after something a bit more innovative, the diabetic-friendly RegretlessLow Carb Pleasure cafe offers gluten-free desserts with a twist. Known for their Thai milk tea crepe cake, tiramisu, and “chaffles,” Regretless takes familiar desserts and gives them a gluten-free, low-carb spin.

When I visited, I tried the strawberry and cream chaffle — a low-carb, keto-friendly take on the traditional waffle, typically made with cheese and eggs. I was intrigued by the unique combination, though I found it a little on the sweet side.

The next time I visit, I’ll be trying their highly-rated tiramisu. I’ll definitely be back!
